Small House Addition - renovation ideas that look Big

Mako Residence by award-winning architecture firm Bates Masi is a little luxury retreat in Amagansett, NY, boasting relaxed simplicity for casual, comfortable living. At 1,800 sq. ft., this small house looks surprisingly big. The unusual renovation idea called for a small house addition plus an overall exterior redesign to create a more functional and fashionable cottage home. The owners wanted to simplify the exterior from its existing multi-volume turret design, while an addition would increase valuable living space. Minimalist interiors and a white-on-white palette maintain a sense of simplicity for minimalist living that makes this retreat house such a haven. A new kitchen and dining room design are conducive to family meals and entertaining. Upstairs, an added bedroom and bathroom boast a sliding glass wall which opens onto a terrace, offering outdoor living rooms with views of the surrounding sand dunes and the ocean. The roof was extended to form a screen, shielding the house from the sun while giving it a modern new facade. “The screen within is comprised of 16-ft.-long vertical boards, heated and twisted 180 degrees. The twisting boards shade the existing living room windows from the harsh sun above and give privacy from the street below to the bedroom,” explain the architects. “During the day, the interiors are filled with soft reflected light and the views are preserved. At night, when backlit and viewed from the road that descends in front of the home, the twisting boards create visual effects that seem to move as the viewer does.” What an interesting house addition idea! Farmhouse Style Homes – Modern Rustic Home Addition

Farmhouse style homes have a warm, understated appeal, but this is one wooden house addition that takes center stage! Designed by award-winning, Belgium-based firm Wim Goes Architectuur, this Flemish countryside home in the city of Gent, surrounded by blankets of green grass and lush gardens, fittingly has a weathered wood extension that adds to the rustic house style. An exterior of naturally graying wood encloses a living area that extends onto an outdoor patio, creating an outdoor living room. Walls of glass offer 360 degrees of views, while beyond the functioning floor-to-ceiling glass doors is a pond – the perfect, peaceful setting for quiet contemplation or an evening of entertaining guests in style. And for either activity, the underground wine cellar will certainly enhance that experience. Inspired by Japanese house design with influences of Finnish architects, the feel of this farmhouse is simplicity, serenity and nature. Wim Goes Architectuur

House Additions Ideas – a sunroom over the ravine

This gorgeous contemporary house, called House for Two Artists in San Diego, California was designed for two artists who, like the architects, have an undeniable love of nature. The contemporary design idea by modern architects Taal Safdie and Ricardo Rabines features a wonderful addition to the existing house – a 500-sq.-ft. glass-enclosed sunroom that gives this home a great sense of the outdoors, inside. The main volume and a loft space housed in the adjoining tower boast operational clerestory windows which flood the space with bright, natural light. Opening onto a patio, this amazing home carries that same sense of the outdoors into living spaces, which feature lots of skylights and windows, and Mexican stone floors that complement the dark, natural wood accents throughout. Outdoor Living House Plan Embraces Ireland Landscape

Talk about a room with a view! This outdoor living house plan is architecturally interesting and appealing for its unique shape and glass walls among an amazing natural setting. Landscape Room House by LID Architecture is a contemporary country home overlooking Glencar Lake and surrounded by mountains in Sligo, Ireland. The existing house was renovated, reorganized, and totally opened up to the outdoors to create an outdoor living and entertaining area. “The main plan was to break out from the restrictive form of the existing to create a ‘landscape room,’ partly internal, partly external, orientated to the south-west, and surrounded by the landscape,” explains the architect. The focal feature of this modern, interesting home, the indoor/outdoor room is a sun-soaked space for relaxing alone or entertaining groups; for reading, lounging or dining, connected to the kitchen inside the house. The innovative, inverted roof is designed to harvest rainwater, and visually connects the home to a garden pond and the lake beyond. LID Architecture

Glass House Additions - 1910 historic house renovation

The Ansley Glass House additions by Atlanta-based architects Brian Bell and David Yocum of BLDGS is a spectacular renovation of a 1910-era home in a historic downtown neighborhood. A striking glass addition sets the tone for this contemporary house, which is cutting-edge, with traditional elements. The modern glass home plan includes a garage, a kitchen, family room, library, and a staircase which connects the home’s three levels. Topping of this modern architectural design is an enclosed roof top loft and open terrace with city skyline views. This amazing glass wall house features rich, dark finishes complemented by the natural light from the expansive windows. An unusual house plan puts split-level interiors spiraling around a central suspended staircase. BLDGS.
