Timber Home Design – Lakefront Treehouse

Atlanta-based architecture firm Lord, Aeck & Sargent is the brain behind this beautiful rustic timber home design in Rutledge, Georgia. This house made of trees is also in the trees, making it a true “treehouse” by all accounts. Designed for Camp Twin Lakes, a camping program for ill and disabled children, the lake house is a place where campers can connect with nature. The wheelchair-accessible design works into a bigger picture of all-access nature trails winding their way around a pair of lakes. The architecture firm held an in-house competition juried by board members and campers, and this organic house made the grade. This wood home sits on a sloped site, with wheelchair access via a curving wooden ramp leading to a deck 15 ft. above ground. Inside, the 1,200-sq.-ft. house features a central octagonal-shaped space as the main area used for environmental arts and crafts, while four additional multi-sided spaces offer additional living and lounging spaces, all enclosed in floor-to-ceiling glass and topped off by a green roof. Lake Home Design by Contemporary Canadian Architects

This Canadian lake home design has a wonderful natural characteristic to it, which exudes casual comfort as a relaxing retreat high above the everyday hustle and bustle. Designed by Calgary-based Sturgess Architecture, this wood country home on Bowen Island faces north on a steep cliff overlooking Howe Sound, surrounded by nature with water at its feet 100m below. This timber home design was made for a couple and their two children, visitors and extended family, divided as a primary residence and guest house which are linked under one roof. This raised house plan is an elongated bow-tie design which maximizes glazing – and the amazing views – while minimizing its visual impact amongst the landscape. The cottage style design boasts an earthy appeal with a naturally finished slate, cedar shingles and a copper-colored roof which extends across the two volumes and framed the view of the water beyond. Italian Stone House with rustic appeal on Lake Como, by architect Arturo Montanelli

Nature meets architecture in this amazing Italian countryside home by architect Arturo Montanelli. Built into a slope, this hillside house has a strong sense of gravity to it, grounded in a heavy, stone design. This stone house may be cool, but it has very warm qualities, incorporating exposed concrete and limestone with natural wood and exposed ceiling beams for a rustic look. This gorgeous lake house frames amazing views of Lake Como and the Italian countryside in every direction, adding to its natural appeal. The main floor is bright and airy, with a double-height living room and floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the garden outside. Upstairs, bedrooms boast peace and privacy. A strong Mediterranean style flavors the modern yet authentic stone home design. Arturo Montanelli

Rustic Lake Cabin – Hidden Gem on Green Lake, Wisconsin

Johnsen Schmaling Architects are the designers behind the rustic Camouflage House, hidden in Green Lake, Wisconsin. This magnificent, modern lake cabin is perched on a steep hillside overlooking the lake, surrounded by trees in a veritable nature-lovers wonderland. This densely treed plateau has inspired the look of this natural house design; a rustic, low-profile silhouette with cedar and glass panels, framed to resemble the forest’s vertical lines and repetition. An understated, low-lying entrance gives way to a stunning, 2,700-sq.-ft. two-storey lake house that appears to spill down the hillside, with the breathtaking lake just beyond. Like the cabin-like exterior (a very chic cabin!), interiors are rustic and minimalist, yet sophisticated, elegant and chic all at once. Natural elements prevail, like warm and rich woods, and earth tones, and the panoramic views. Johnsen Schmaling Architects

Contemporary Lake House by Dutch Architect Paul de Ruiter

Dutch architect Paul de Ruiter designed Villa Roling – a contemporary lake house in Kudelstaart, Netherlands – for an art-collecting couple with obviously impeccable tastes. Designed in a maritime style with a modern edge, this cool, contemporary home is a beacon of light on the edge of Lake Westeinderplas, with its glass-enclosed ground level topped by a contrasting volume of wood – a space designated to housing the clients’ art collection. From inside, the views of lake and garden grounds are maximized through the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, which offer the interior a very minimal, wall-less look, complemented by interesting finishes, luxurious flooring and a fabulous two-storey living space at the heart of it all, crowned with a skylight that naturally illuminated the couple’s prized paintings.
