The extension cord mistake that’s quietly putting your home at risk of fire: the 1-minute safety fix

Most house fires don’t start the way movies show them. There’s no gas leak, no candle knocked over by the cat, no forgotten pan on the stove. They start quietly, in a spot the homeowner walks past every single day without a second thought, from something that looks completely harmless.

And that’s what makes them so frustrating for fire investigators. The setup that started the fire is almost always still sitting in millions of other American homes, right now, doing the same thing it was doing the night the house burned down. Same shortcut. Same room. Same “it’s been like that for years, it’s fine.”

The numbers back that up. Every year in the U.S., about 51,000 home fires trace back to electrical problems, killing close to 500 people and causing more than $1.3 billion in damage, per the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), which pulls its figures from the National Fire Protection Association. A big slice of those don’t come from bad wiring hidden in walls, or old fuse boxes, or storms. They come from something plugged in and running in plain sight, in the living room, in the bedroom, behind the TV. Something ordinary.

And out of everything on that list, one setup keeps showing up over and over in the reports: a single household habit that roughly 3,300 fires a year come back to, killing about 50 people, injuring 270 more, per ESFI. It’s the exact kind of shortcut people take because it looks safer and cleaner than the alternative. That’s the twist. The tidy solution is the one that lights the room on fire.

Almost every home has at least one

Think about the outlets in the room you’re sitting in. The nearest one is usually a few feet from where you actually need power, right? So a lamp on the far side of the couch, a Christmas tree in the corner, a phone charger by the bed, a TV in a spot the wall outlet doesn’t quite reach — all of them end up connected the same way. With a cord. Running across the floor.

Cords across the floor look ugly. And worse, they’re a tripping hazard, especially if there are kids or older folks in the house, or a dog that’s decided the middle of the room is home base. So most people do the thing that seems both smart and neat at the same time: they tuck the cord out of the way, under something soft, where nobody can see it and nobody can trip over it.

Under a rug. Under a runner in the hallway. Under the edge of the couch. Under a bedroom carpet. Anywhere it stops being visible.

And that’s the moment the setup stops being a lamp cord and starts being one of the top hidden fire risks in the American home.

The tidy fix is the risky one

Fire marshals, insurance companies, and licensed electricians all talk about this the same way, because the trouble under that rug isn’t one thing. Three things are going wrong at the same time, all invisible to you, all making each other worse.

  • The first is heat. Every extension cord, even a shiny new one from a name-brand store, gets a little warm when power runs through it. Out in open air, that warmth blows off into the room and you never feel it. Under a rug, the rug fibers work like a blanket. The heat has nowhere to go, so it starts piling up.
  • The second is a temperature limit almost nobody has heard of. The plastic wrap on nearly every cord in your home is only rated to stay safe up to about 140°F (60°C). That ceiling is way lower than most people would guess. Once trapped heat pushes the cord past that mark, the plastic itself starts breaking down. It doesn’t melt in a big dramatic way. It just slowly loses the ability to protect the copper wires inside. That’s the part you can’t see, and can’t smell, yet.
  • The third is what your feet are doing. Every time somebody walks across that rug, you’re pressing down on the cord. Inside are dozens of really fine copper strands twisted together. Foot traffic bends and re-bends those strands at the same spot, over and over. A few of them snap. Then a few more. Nothing looks different on the outside. But inside, that one squashed spot now has fewer strands trying to carry the same amount of power, which means it runs hotter than the rest of the cord. Quietly getting hotter, right up against a piece of woven fabric.

Put all three of those together, and you’ve got a rug with heat piling up under it, plastic slowly cooking past what it can handle, and a hot spot right where a hidden strand snapped. That’s how a rug can catch fire from underneath while nobody’s home.

And this isn’t just a blogger’s opinion

The reason electricians talk about this the way they do is because it’s written straight into the rulebook their whole trade follows. The National Electrical Code, Section 400.12, spells it out: extension cords can’t stand in for permanent home wiring, can’t run through walls, floors, doorways, or ceilings, and can’t be covered or hidden. That’s not a friendly suggestion. It’s the code every licensed electrician in the country works from, published by the NFPA.

Big insurance companies say the same thing in plain English. State Farm’s own home-safety page tells homeowners flat-out: if a cord is covered, like under a rug, the heat can’t escape, and the result can be a fire. The Alabama Fire College, which trains real firefighters, lists running cords under carpets and rugs as one of the top three ways extension cords set houses on fire, right alongside overloading and using them long-term.

One more honest note: even the code says extension cords are meant to be temporary. Electricians usually read that as 90 days or less. If your cord has been under that rug for a year, or three years, you’re not really looking at a cord problem anymore. You’re looking at an outlet problem your house has been trying to tell you about for a while.

What to actually do about it

Do this today (about 1 minute, zero dollars):

  1. Lift the rug and pull the cord out from under it. That single move is the most important one. An uncovered cord can shed its heat safely, and if it does start acting up, you can actually see it.
  2. Run your hand along the cord. If any part feels warm, looks discolored, feels stiff or cracked, or gives off a faint burning-plastic smell, unplug it and throw it out. Don’t wrap it in tape and keep using it.
  3. Check what it’s powering. If a space heater, a window AC, a fridge, or a microwave is plugged into that cord, unplug it right now. Those appliances don’t belong on an extension cord, ever, rug or no rug. They pull too much power, and per ESFI, they’re one of the most common starting points for extension cord fires.

Do this on the weekend (about $10 to $20, about 10 minutes):

  • Move the cord to the baseboard using a paintable cord cover. These are thin plastic channels (often sold as “cord raceways” or “cord hiders”) that stick to the wall with peel-and-stick backing and tuck the cord along the baseboard where air can still get to it. Brands like D-Line, Legrand Wiremold, and Yecaye sell them at hardware stores for around $10 to $20, enough to cover a whole room. Most are paintable so they blend into your wall.
  • Don’t staple or nail the cord to the baseboard. That’s another NEC 400.12 no-go, and it damages the plastic in the exact way you’re trying to prevent.

Do this soon (the real, permanent fix):

  • If a cord has been in the same spot for more than 90 days, you don’t really have a cord problem. You have an outlet problem. The right fix, the one every safety group points to, is having a licensed electrician add a new outlet where you actually need power.
