Extra detergent isn’t making your clothes cleaner: the simple measurement laundry pros use instead

You’ve done it. It’s a bigger load than usual, or the gym clothes smell rougher than usual, so you tip the bottle a little longer. Fill the cap a little higher. Maybe just eyeball it right into the drum.

It feels like the right move. More dirt in, more soap in. That’s how laundry has always worked.

Except the clothes come out and something’s off. The towels feel stiff. Your favorite black t-shirt looks kind of dusty. There’s a faint sour smell in the workout shirts that a second wash won’t kill. And every few weeks, when you lean into the machine, there’s that smell coming from the rubber ring, or from somewhere deeper you can’t quite see.

You blame the machine. You blame the detergent brand. You buy a “stronger” one. None of those are the problem. The problem is the extra glug you were proud of.

Almost every American household is doing this

This isn’t a small mistake. It’s the default.

According to Consumer Reports, most modern detergents are a lot more concentrated than the ones we grew up with, and shoppers keep pouring them like they’re the old stuff. Their laundry testers, along with Procter & Gamble’s own product engineers, keep flagging the same pattern: the average household uses roughly twice the detergent it actually needs.

Part of that is the cap. The little dosing lines inside most liquid caps are white on white, and they’re famously hard to see. So people fill to the brim, or to “about here-ish,” and figure that’s one serving. It isn’t. Filling the cap to the top can be three to five times the actual dose the bottle was designed for.

And what makes that matter more today than it used to is what’s on the other side of that pour: the washer itself.

Your washer isn’t the washer you grew up with

If you own a high-efficiency washer, which basically means a front-loader or one of the newer top-loaders with no big post in the middle, it uses way less water than your parents’ machine did.

The numbers are wild. ENERGY STAR, the federal EPA program that certifies efficient appliances, says a full-sized ENERGY STAR washer uses about 14 gallons of water per load (roughly 53 liters), versus 20 gallons (76 liters) for a standard one. Whirlpool and Maytag both say the most efficient models can clean a full load on as little as 7 gallons (about 26 liters).

That’s the whole issue in one line. Your washer got a lot thirstier for less water, but the amount of soap you pour in stayed the same.

Where all that extra soap actually ends up

When there isn’t enough water to rinse the detergent out, it doesn’t just disappear. It has to go somewhere. And it does.

Some of it stays on your clothes. That thin, sticky film is what makes towels feel stiff, dark colors look dull, and workout shirts hang onto sweat smells even after a wash. As Whirlpool puts it in their own guide on smelly washers, leftover detergent leaves a residue that traps odor-causing bacteria right in the fabric. The appliance-repair industry says it even more plainly: if your just-washed clothes feel a little slippery or soapy between your fingers, that’s leftover soap, and it’s the reason the smell won’t come out.

The rest of the residue stays inside the machine. It builds up on the rubber door gasket, in the detergent drawer, along the drum, and down in the drain pump.

This is the part that stops being just about looks. A 2025 study in Frontiers in Microbiology tested household washing machines and found that the moist, soap-coated inside of a washer is basically a buffet for bacteria and mold. The researchers found slimy microbe layers loaded with things like Pseudomonas, Aspergillus, and Cladosporium. Front-loaders were significantly dirtier inside than top-loaders, because they hold leftover water for longer. Every extra ounce of soap you pour is one more meal for that gunk.

Repair techs say the same buildup is why HE washer drain pumps quit early. Mr. Appliance, a national repair chain, lists too much detergent as a top cause of drainage problems and pump clogs. Those repairs usually run a few hundred dollars, or push you into shopping for a new washer years before you should.

So the extra soap isn’t just wasted money. It’s actively working against you. It’s dulling your clothes, feeding the smell you’re trying to wash out, and slowly killing your machine.

The measurement laundry pros actually use

It’s almost silly how small it is.

For a normal load in a modern HE washer, Consumer Reports says to use about 1.5 fluid ounces of liquid detergent, which is roughly 2 tablespoons (about 44 milliliters). That’s it. Double it only if the load is genuinely huge or truly filthy.

If you use Tide (or most Procter & Gamble brands), look at the directions on the back of the bottle, not just the cap. The dosing map is: fill just to bar 1 for a medium load, bar 3 for a large load, bar 5 for a full HE load. Bar 1 is the lowest mark inside the cap, not the highest. Most people have been filling to bar 5 or above it for every load, thinking that was the normal amount.

What to do when the load actually is filthy

If clothes are truly gross (yard work, sweat-soaked gym gear, food stains), don’t add more soap. Add more time or heat. The pro playbook:

  • Rub a dab of detergent directly on the stains before the load goes in.
  • Use warm water instead of cold for the wash. Detergent needs warmth to actually work.
  • Run a longer or “heavy duty” cycle. Same dose, more time to lift the dirt.
  • Don’t stuff the drum full. Clothes need space to tumble. A packed washer can’t rinse.

And if your machine already smells: run one empty hot cycle with 2 cups (about 475 milliliters) of plain white vinegar in the drum, then wipe out the rubber gasket with a cloth. That’s the same reset Whirlpool publishes for their own front-loaders.
