Modern Waratah Bay House Gives Nod to M.C. Escher

This sprawling modern home by Hane Wadley Architechture sits overlooking Waratah Bay, Australia – and thus the name. As you drive up to the property, the strong roof-line and solid facade hide one of the home’s major selling points – the incredible view over the bay. The reveal takes place as you walk in the door. Prior to that, you’re totally mesmerized by the strong lines of the house and the pattern of the glazed brick walls. An interpretation of M.C. Escher’s ‘Metamorphosis III’ – triangles move transform into birds, rounding the corner and clearly flying up towards the living / dining pavilion area.

The angle of the roof above the pavilion continues the sweeping lines of the birds’ journey.

We love the hanging lights and the continuous concrete floor. And the view. The house looks out over Wilson’s Promontory – a national park on Australia’s south coast.

The bedrooms have been kept simple. The view is the thing – and the social zones are the key areas of the home.

The living/dining pavilion is the main family area. Note the vents in the ceiling, continuing the bird theme.

If this bathroom isn’t pure Escher, we don’t know what is.
