Understated Two-Wing Ranch House Design

Designed by Bercy Chen Studio, this Texas residence differentiates itself from the classical Texan home from many points of view. The first and most obvious difference is that of appearance. Unlike the traditional more show-off mansions erected on two floors or more, this pavilion house keeps close to the ground level, expanding horizontally rather than vertically. The side of the house that faces the street is quite unassuming, with native limestone facades and very low profile. The other difference consists in the water-collection technologies that are integrated to the roofs. Instead of being a huge resource consumer, the house produces its own energy through a system of water-collecting roofs, photovoltaic panels and solar hot-water panels. The horizontal development of the house is more important away from the street and towards the creek at back. The limestone walls create two spinal cords for the two main wings of the house, that are connected by a narrow corridor which serves as main entrance. Besides its entrance role, this corridor with translucent glass facades hides the courtyard and pool deck from street view. From the main entrance the circulation is directed towards the left public-day wing or towards the right private-night wing of the house.

The left wing of the house is the social area, with en suite kitchen, dining room and living room areas.

The kitchen occupies a corner of this area, with full height built in cabinets and appliances. The layout is competed by a cooking island that serves the double function of breakfast counter. The colors are warm, with a predominance of light wood.

The living room is at the far end of the wing. It is enclosed on one side by the limestone back wall, and on the other two sides by full height glazed facades, which allow for views on the wild nature, on the pool deck and adjacent garden. Large fabric upholstered sofas and daybeds offer lots of comfortable seating.

The second wing of the house is dedicated to the private night spaces, with master bedroom, guest bedrooms, a playroom and bathrooms. The access to each room is from the narrow corridor that runs along the whole length of this wing.

Two of the bedrooms share a playroom. The design is classical with textile beds with big upholstered headboards and built-in storage.

The pool and its wooden surrounding deck are oriented towards the creek. They are enclosed on three sides by the wings of the house and the entrance corridor, so they are quiet and private areas, perfect for relaxing moments.
