
Taking your personal flatware to a fast food restaurant may be cause for curious stares, as well as being just downright inconvenient. The student designers who form BVD (Black Valley Design) Collective have a solution: they repurpose recycled plastic flatware to create stunningly beautiful modern lighting fixtures. Waste Not is an appropriate moniker for this after-school student project that reflects the groups ingenuity and resourcefulness as well as a clean, modern design aesthetic.

Both eco-conscious and elegant, the Fire and Water Fibonacci Series offers modern lighting solutions for just about any room. The series includes pendant, sconce, table and floor lighting – all with spiral lampshades made from recycled and salvaged wood veneer and process chlorine free paper. Lamp bases are constructed from Environ, a bio-composite made with soy flour and recycled paper. All finishes are water-based and low VOC.

Jerry Kott describes himself as a “maker”: thereby stretching beyond the limited boundaries of categories such as artist, designer or craftsperson. One of the things he “makes” are modern lighting fixtures hand crafted from recycled bottles. His RE Series is based on the philosophy of “rebuild, redefine, relive, reinvent and recycle”.
