The office and home of the Ganna Studio designers in Taipei, Taiwan is a great example of how to “marry” different materials, how to combine the old with the new and how to borrow design elements. They are not afraid to use, in a very limited space, such contrasting materials as wood, concrete, glossy glass, marble and fabric. The end result is quite daring and every room has a very strong personality! The old, represented here by the herringbone pattern of the floor and the decorative moldings of the walls, goes hand in hand with the new, such as the massive concrete and raw wood walls. The borrowed is mainly the furniture, as most of the pieces are European and North American contemporary design items. The study is an interesting space that opens up or closes down depending on the mood of its occupants, through a system of revolving vertical panels. On the kitchen side, these panels are covered in tri-dimensional wallpaper that recalls the ancient decorative moldings. On the study side, these panels are left raw to match the desk top which seems to be made of reclaimed wood. Note also the mix of chairs, no two identical pieces, and all design icons! In the TV room, the Couture sofa by Roche Bobois is an amazing made-to-measure creation! The different colors and patterns of the fabric seem to fade into one another, and the massive marble slab loses all its weight and seems to be floating on air.
