Cool Basement Apartment with Gorgeous Urban Design

This gorgeous Swedish apartment is a great example of how to transform an urban basement into a beautiful and original living space. This space of more than 200 square meters is set in the basement of a beginning of the 20th century building. The designers did an outstanding job in transforming it into a big apartment with great design and functional layout. The apartment has two entrances, the main one and a secondary one from the small garden that comes with it. The circulation into this space is given by the walls, some of them built obliquely in order to lead the way. From the main entrance, immediately on the left there are a practical space storage/hanging clothes and a guest toilet. On the left side of the entrance there is the living and dining area, as well as a small study. Going to the right from the entrance there is the open kitchen and along the left wall there are three bedrooms with walk-in closets and en-suite bathrooms. On the way out to the terrace garden there is a utility space where the washing machine and the dryer have been installed. Quite unexpected for a basement that does not benefit from a lot of natural light, not the walls of this apartment are painted white. Throughout the living room and in some of the bedrooms we find warm shades of medium grey, a surprising black in the master bathroom and even fluorescent fuchsia in one of the small bathrooms. In an attempt to bring sky views to the apartment, the ceilings have fun skies, clouds and stars painted on in light blue and white. The bare concrete of the floors is covered with epoxy paint in grey and white.

The design of the living room is very eclectic. The center of the room is covered with overlapping oriental rugs, and there are more low tables of various heights, made of metal bases and glass tops. Around these there’s a mix of a bright red Chesterfield sofa, a more contemporary linen-upholstered sofa, two matching leather lounge chairs and a leather bean bag like pouf. More to the side there is also a red Swan lounge chair to complete the picture. The colors are strong but warm, and there is a mix of ethnic motifs. A big and heavy looking metal pendant light seems fall from the ceiling sky.

The dining room is part of the same open space as the living room and is divided from the small study by a large wooden sliding door. When this door is open, the study basically becomes part of the open space. A nice square wooden dining table can seat eight on wood and resin design chairs.

The kitchen is a retro looking mix of white and black with red accents. The walls are completely tiled with small sized white square tiles, which form a grid due to the use of black grout to fill the joints. This pattern continues with that of the black-painted window frame and with the big linear handles of the kitchen drawers. The retro look culminates with the two special edition black Smeg fridges and the industrial looking black pedant light that hang above the kitchen island.

In the main bedroom there is a wall that serves as headboard on the one side, and as separation for a walk-through closet on the other. The headboard side is covered with bright colored geometric pattern wallpaper. The walls are warm grey and the gold-leaf wall hanging brings more light and warmth to the room.

The master bathroom is completely tiled with matt black mosaic and the sanitary ware is also black, as well as the freestanding oval bathtub. The floor covered in traditional concrete tiles comes to cheer up this somber space.
