Small, Smart and Sustainable modular home makes a sweet retreat

The House Arc by Bellomo Architects may not be much to look at, with its humble, “tin can” facade, but there’s more to this cool compact cottage than meets the eye! Innovative, modular and eco sustainable, this 150 sq. ft. home was designed to be conveniently flat packed to just 4 by 10 by 3 ft., and easily transported to your location of choice. It’s made to weather any storm, withstanding tropical winds and inclement weather with ease.

According to architect Joseph Bellomo, who together with Taraneh Naddafi conceived the structure, “We designed the House Arc to function like a kit of parts so that it could be assembled quickly – like prefab furniture.”

Bellomo continues, “The House Arc was conceived as a modest, easy to construct modular system that could act as both a gracious shelter for communities in need, and as an attractive solution for individuals interested in backyard home expansion.”

Virtually entirely off the grid, this eco friendly cottage is made of recycled steel and includes a roof mounted solar energy generator. Raised on concrete blocks, the structure allows for free flow of air around it, for passive cooling, while operable windows invite cool breezes to blow through.

The House Arc will be making an appearance at Sunset Magazine’s Celebration Weekend, June 2 and 3, 2012 in Menlo Park, California, as part of the show’s Ultimate Outdoor Living Room display. Each year, the two day celebration showcases a distinctive modular home – check it out for yourself!
