This amazing outdoor living house plan features ground floors that open onto vast patios, upper levels lined with terraces, and large expanses of glass that invite the breathtaking vistas in at every turn. When the client requested a contemporary style home “with an overriding sense of simplicity but with a high degree of sophistication,” South African architects Metropole Architects knew they had their work cut out for them. They created this modernist home with cutting edge architecture that is softened by organic materials inspired by these surroundings.
They designed this family home with carefully framed panoramic vistas, and a natural palette of materials to complement these natural surroundings.
Wood screens, cladding and decking, off-shutter concrete and stone help to balance the home’s ultra modern architecture.
On the other side, terraced living areas and bedrooms offer vistas of the densely forested downward slope.
You enter the house and immediately get its sense of part nature, part cosmopolitan contemporary. Among its earthy materials of wood, concrete and stone, water is also a key contributor. The architects explain, “The extensive use of water in the design of the home includes a 25 meter lap pool with a glass panel between the water and the basement cinema room, and a shallow but expansive reflective pond on the approach side, which mirrors the building day and night, and evokes a sense of tranquility.”
Inside, you can’t help but notice the home’s sense of openness and space, but the natural materials lend it a sense of intimacy and warmth. The glass faced facade invites natural light and views, leading past a wood-enclosed staircase and through into the principal living areas.
The kitchen is surely the hub of this home, connected to the living room and dining nook, both of which boast folding glass doors opening onto the patio. The recessed wood ceiling and wood-paneled island add a dose of earthy charm to contemporary elements like stainless steel appliances and modern lighting integrated into the ceiling.
The single pane glass backsplash is a cool touch, topped by open wood shelves that stretch from wall to wall, providing the perfect place to display favorite collections and kitchen essentials.
Framed by floor to ceiling glass, the even present views are an always inspiring focal point that make those culinary chores a complete pleasure.
Just off the kitchen, this delicious dining area is small but sweet – the ideal spot to host an intimate evening of dinner and drinks. The warm grey walls with built-in bookshelves give it a cave-like feeling, opened up with a white, illuminated recessed ceiling and walk-out to the patio.
This is a beautiful private place to enjoy a pre-breakfast java or post-dinner drinks and dessert, along with a breath of fresh air.
Of course, this outdoor living house plan is not short of alfresco areas. The terraces are true outdoor living rooms, offering all the style and panache of interiors but under an open sky and looking out onto the horizon.
These outdoor entertaining areas are sheltered by a deep overhanging roof that lets residents and guests enjoy the outdoors, regardless of the weather!
The open staircase is an interesting eyeful indeed, encompassing a cool concrete ceiling overhead, a glazed exterior wall overlooking nature, a trio of contemporary pendants suspended into the void, and a collection of cherished family moments captured in snapshots and put proudly on display.
The skewed upper volume is immediately a focus when viewed from outside. While inside…
The angled wall also defines the shape of this private upper-level den area.
The master bedroom is the spot for sleeping and lounging in privacy and luxury, open to the ensuite bathroom positioned on a platform two steps up.
This luxurious bathroom features natural wood walls and floors, and a massive freestanding tub front and center.
Another bedroom, blending warmth, modern style, and views!
Down the stairs, past a stunning glass wall that reflects the home’s strong connection to nature.
Housed in the privacy of the basement, a theater room features a wall-to-wall glass panel that offers underwater views of the pool.
The “cinematic” scenes of the pool lure you to come on out and dive on in!
Whether you find yourself inside or outside the house, or on one of its many, many outdoor living and entertaining areas, the surrounding scenery is an ever-present feature.
