You’ve tried the fragrance-free lotion. You’ve switched detergents twice. You bought the gentle body wash the review site said was the safest one on the shelf. And the itchy patch on your arm, the little bumps on your shoulders, or the spot behind your knee that keeps coming back every few weeks is still there.
Before you spend another $30 (€28) on a new cream, walk into your laundry room. The problem might not be on your skin at all. It might be sitting inside a machine you’ve probably never once stopped to question, for the simple reason that its whole job is to clean things.

What most people never think about
Your washing machine is not a self-cleaning machine. That sounds obvious once you say it out loud, but almost nobody actually thinks of it that way. It runs water through itself all day, so how dirty could it really be? The honest answer is: dirtier than you’d guess, in spots you can’t see.
There are three tucked-away places inside every washer where water alone can’t reach: the rubber ring around the door on a front-loader, the low pocket at the bottom of the drum where a little water always sits, and the drawer where you pour your detergent. Over months and years, those three spots slowly collect what your loads leave behind. Not just dirt. Something living.

This isn’t a viral internet claim
It’s a stack of peer-reviewed research most people have never heard of.
A 2024 review in the science journal Antibiotics looked at washing machines in home after home and kept finding the same slimy, invisible layer of living germs in the same hidden spots every time. The two germs most often found there have long, unfamiliar Latin names, but the plain-English version is this: they’re the kind that can bother skin and slow down healing on small cuts and scrapes.
A separate 2015 study in the U.S. National Library of Medicine put it even more bluntly. Washing machines can, in some cases, hold more of these germs than a household toilet.
What that has to do with your skin
Every time you run a load, water rushes over that hidden layer and picks up a little of what’s living in it. Those germs get spread onto your clean clothes as they tumble in the drum. Then you dry those clothes, fold them, and put them back on your skin for the next 8 to 16 hours.
For most people with tough, healthy skin, this passes without anyone noticing a thing. But if your skin runs on the sensitive side, if you deal with eczema, mild rashes, or you’ve been washing your hands and face a lot lately, that daily contact against the same fabric can be enough to keep something going that would otherwise heal on its own.
A 2025 paper in Frontiers in Microbiology looked at exactly this: germs traveling from the washer back onto the freshly washed clothes. The researchers said, in plain terms, that a regular home wash doesn’t reliably clear these germs off the fabric or off the machine. Your washer, in other words, might be quietly putting back on your clothes the same thing you keep trying to wash off.

Why it’s gotten worse in the last few years
Three totally normal, well-meaning laundry habits have made this problem much bigger than it used to be. Almost every American household does at least one of them, and most do all three.
The first is washing almost everything in cold water. It’s the default advice everywhere. It saves energy, it’s easier on the fabric, and for the clothes themselves, that advice is right. It just isn’t right for the machine. Cold water can’t melt away the oily film left behind by skin oil, soap, and softener. Reporting on Dr. Charles Gerba, the University of Arizona germ expert widely known as “Dr. Germ,” notes that most harmful germs only start dying off reliably at water temperatures of about 140°F (60°C) or higher. A normal cold cycle isn’t even close.
The second is closing the washer door the moment a load is done. It looks tidier. It also traps all the leftover moisture inside. GE’s own lab testing, reported by Consumer Reports, found the door-ring area of a front-loader sits at about 99% humidity right after a wash if you shut the door. That’s a greenhouse for mold.
The third is liquid fabric softener and heavy pours of liquid detergent. Both leave a waxy, oily coating on the drum and the door ring. That coating is, quite literally, food for the germs already living there.
Consumer Reports’ 2025 survey of nearly 95,000 washer owners found that 13% of front-loader owners can already see mold or mildew inside their machine, and another 13% notice a lasting bad smell. If a quarter of front-loader owners can already see or smell the problem, plenty more have the earlier version of it and just haven’t spotted it yet.
If that sounds like your laundry routine, here’s the fix
You don’t need to buy a new machine, and you don’t need a new brand of anything. The fix takes about two minutes of hands-on time and costs a few dollars.
Once a month, do this
- Skip the vinegar trick. You’ll see it recommended everywhere online. Don’t do it. Maytag, Whirlpool, and Consumer Reports all warn against it. Vinegar slowly eats at the rubber door ring and the hoses, and on many machines it can void your warranty.
- Use one of these two options instead. Either pour 1 cup (240 ml) of regular chlorine bleach into the bleach drawer, which is the exact method Consumer Reports and Clorox both publish. Or drop one washing machine cleaner tablet (Affresh is the common U.S. brand, around $3 or €2.80 per tablet) straight into the empty drum.
- Run the hottest cycle your machine has. If you have a “clean washer” or “sanitize” setting, use it. Otherwise use the longest normal cycle with the hot-water option on. The heat is what does the real work.
- Leave the drum empty. No clothes in there for this run.
After every load, do this
- Take a cloth and wipe the rubber door ring dry. Peel back the folds and get the leftover water, hair, and lint out.
- Every couple of weeks, pull out the detergent drawer and rinse it under warm water. That drawer, believe it or not, tends to be the germiest single spot in the whole machine.
- Leave the washer door open between loads. Even a couple of inches (5 cm) is enough to let the inside dry out.
- If you can, run at least one hot-water load a week, like towels or sheets. That gives the machine itself a bit of a heat treatment that a cold-only routine never provides.
What actually changes after 2 or 3 weeks
Give this two to three weeks and a few things line up at once. That faint musty smell you’d sort of stopped noticing goes away. Your towels actually smell clean an hour after they dry, instead of turning slightly sour. And for a lot of people dealing with a mild, stubborn skin problem, the flare-ups get quieter or stop showing up at all. The reason is simple: you finally cut off the thing that was quietly putting the problem back on your clothes every single wash.
The most expensive skin cream in the world can’t out-work a machine that’s putting the problem right back on your body every time you get dressed. Sometimes the real answer isn’t another product. Sometimes it’s the machine you already own, doing a job you never realized you’d been asking it to do.
