Bisazza Clown Sofa

bisazza-clown-sofa.jpg

There’s no denying it – the Bisazza Clown Sofa has real personality. Designed by Spanish Jaima Hayon, the sofa reflects his merging of art and design – and also reveals his associations with toy design! The Bisazza sofa is new for 2008 from the award-winning designer. Playful, bright and chunky, a circular bright blue sofa stretches all the way around a central backrest. Ideal for busy or public spaces, this smart arrangement means that many people can be comfortably seated on the plush sofa in a relatively small space. The sofa is topped with a cute moulded head which looks like an appealing cartoon character – although it is an abstract form open to interpretation. Contact Bisazza to receive a catalogue with more information on the Clown Sofa.

ultra-modern-furniture-horm-riddled-table.jpg

This visually spectacular, ultra-modern furniture is from Horm, and designed by Steven Holl. The Riddled table and cupboard cast a beautiful pattern upon the floor and surfaces around it – an unexpected and inspiring feature. Light streams through the cut-outs in the walnut veneered legs of the table, emerging from within. The top is of 12mm thick tempered glass. The Riddled cupboard is a combination of aluminium and walnut veneer structure, engraved by laser. Imagine the table or cupboard in a room with few other furnishings… a simple, polished concrete floor perhaps… the effect is simply breathtaking. It’s worth investing in signature pieces of furniture with enduring sculptural beauty that will give joy for many years to come. Wooden Loveseat by Jake Phipps

jake-phipps-wooden-loveseat.jpg

Wood. Just wood. Nothing else. The Wooden Loveseat by Jake Phipps fully exploits the natural beauty of wood with careful craftsmanship that takes little away, yet adds so much. A massive trunk of cedar is sculpted into a twin bench with awesome presence. You can practise the method of telling a tree’s age by counting the growth rings… the cut of the wood makes these clearly visible on the end as the piece lies horizontally. Preserving the tree for all time, the bench is suitable for indoor or outdoor use. To make this memorable loveseat yours, contact Jake Phipps in their London studio.

Huggy Armchair by Lago

Huggy_01.jpg

A whimsically creative approach to an armchair that is so attractive in cosiness that it calls you to try it out and relax. The Huggy armchair by Lago literally wraps you up in all-around comfort! The chair is made of a colourful mattress wedged into a drum base in the shape of a wafer cone. Simply unscrew the base to automatically dislodge the mattress, and voila, you have a spare bed for your guests! Comfortable and practical. The wooden base can even serve as a night table when turned upside down. This chair is perfect for smaller spaces when you simply do not have the room for an extra bed or even a spare mattress. The Huggy armchair is a casual throne for the laid-back personality. This chair was designed by Brit Leissler for Lago Studio.

Air Bed by Lago - new heights

lago-air-bed-1.jpg

No, not an air mattress, but an air bed. A platform bed that rests on four slabs of transparent crystal, making it appear to be floating in mid-air. Another spectacular design by Daniele Lago for an awe-striking minimalist bedroom and an utterly unique sleeping experience; a flying carpet ride that symbolizes the soaring capabilities of the mind during sleep and dreams. The height of the bed is adjustable by rotating the glass supports under the metallic body and the bed itself comes in two sizes. But wait, that’s not all – underneath the mattress you will find twenty figures stenciled into the platform that depict positions from the Kama Sutra (third photo shown here). This interesting discovery might remind you of the many uses of a bed and push you to greater heights of ... sleep ;-). The air bed: an uplifting and arousing design, to be sure.

Ultra-modern Park Bench by Landscapeforms - 'Stay'

landscapeforms-park-bench-stay.jpg

Gone are the old nostalgic park benches, and in come the new generation to populate the city’s landscape. ‘Stay’ by Landscapeforms is from the 35 collection and is a perfect example of this new vision for outdoor furniture. Despite its sleek metal finish, the ‘Stay’ bench is nevertheless designed to blend in with nature through its natural form, as it appears to be growing from the ground like a blooming flower or branches of a tree. The arcked seating and backrest offer comfortable support, while the optional seat dividers discourage the loitering of sleepers and keep skateboarders from using it as a prop. It comes in a variety of colors of powdercoat finish, which is hard but flexible and quite resistant to rusting, chipping, peeling and fading – a necessity when faced with ever-changing harsh outdoor conditions. There is also the option of having it backed or backless, embedded into the pavement or surface mounted. But despite its practical characteristics, the bench’s modern appeal is what creates notice and appreciation. As far as park bench designs go, ‘Stay’ is as sexy as they come.

Inspired by the Sun: The Beam Bed from Lago

beambed.jpg

The moon and the stars are normally associated with the bedroom; however this design was inspired by the largest star of all: The sun. The Beam Bed is unlike anything anyone’s ever seen in a bedroom. It generates light from beneath the centre of the bed and projects it through sunburst throughout the room with the use of lacquered boards. The result is a bed that is divinely inviting and ready to lift you to new heights of sound sleeping. The design is nevertheless functional as a comfortable bed and innovative in its way of supporting the mattress. Just as the sun is the centre of the solar system, the Beam Bed makes the bedroom the centre and key area of this house. This innovative bed design is by Lago.

Modern Corian Tables by Stuart Melrose

lapolloslate-best.jpg

If it’s an urban look you’re going after, these coffee tables by Stuart Melrose would be a dramatic addition to your living room. Futuristic yet practical, these designs play with light and shadow, urban shapes and a large amount of imagination. The coloured glass inlay adds an interesting visual aspect to the many layers of the tables. They are undoubtedly attention-grabbing and unique, especially in the type of materials used. The tables are made of Dupont Corian, which is “an amazing solid surface of an advanced blend of natural minerals and acrylic polymer. This gives it the weight and feel of stone. Corian is so durable it is used for high quality kitchen and bathroom surfaces through to stunning external sculptures at The Royal Festival Hall.” These items are available made-to-order with the option of customizing the colour, size and shape.

New from Moroso - My Beautiful Backside collection of seats

moroso-my-beautiful-backside-sofa.jpg

Now here is an interesting seat idea, created by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien for Moroso, which highlights a playful fusion of two worlds – India and Europe. The Beautiful Backside seats are made of a lacquered wood base frame, and the cushions are covered with colorful Indian textiles that include silk and cotton, and a Kvadrat wool. The focal point, however, are the amazing large buttons on each cushion. The number and size of cushions allow for the opportunity to customize the look. “My Beautiful Backside is a collection of seats whose backrests are a composition of highly colored, floating cushions in various shapes. The wider your seat, the more cushions you can have.”

And the wider your backside ...

Diva Chair by Colico Design - a very distinct modern chair

colico-design-diva-chairs.jpg

Though I'm not exactly keen on everything ultra-modern, the wide cut in the circular backrest of this Diva Chair actually makes it for me. Amazing how adding a small detail can make a big difference. Without the cut it is just another plastic ultra-modern chair, and with the cut it is a chef d'oeuvre, masterpiece of modern design. The Diva Chair is an adorable creation by Colico Design. Colors and more colors are on display for you to pick them now. The army is ready. With 4 leg options available there are plenty of designs to chose from. Some are even stackable. Colico Design
