Desert House in Idaho with concrete 'paradise garden'

The high desert of Idaho is home to the Outpost, a contemporary home designed by the award-winning team of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects, lead by renowned architect Tom Kundig. Known for their artistic take on residential architecture – often designed for art collectors – OSKA Architects delivers again with this modern home designed as a residence, a studio for creating art, and as a showcase to display it. Low-maintenance materials used to build the house include concrete block, car-decking and plywood, chosen by the architects for their ability to withstand the harsh desert climate all year round. “An important aspect of the complex is the protected ‘paradise garden,’ which is separated from the wild landscape by thick concrete walls,” say OSKA Architects, who received a 2009 Residential Architect Design Award for this innovative project.
