You lock the front door. You slide the window shut. You run your hand around the frame and don’t feel a thing. The house is sealed.
Except it isn’t.
Right now, while your heater or A/C is grinding away at your electric bill, air is quietly slipping in and out of your home through gaps so small you’d never feel them. Not the kind of gaps you fix with a big renovation. The kind almost every home has, sitting right around your window sashes and door frames.

The catch is what they add up to.
The “sealed” house that isn’t really sealed
Here’s the part most homeowners never learn. According to Virginia Cooperative Extension (a home-improvement guide put out by Virginia Tech), a pair of front doors without proper weatherstripping can easily have a quarter-inch gap (about 6 mm) running down the edge where the two doors meet. That gap adds up to a 20-square-inch (about 130 cm²) hole to the outside. Roughly the size of a small paperback book, punched right through your wall.
Nobody would leave a hole that size in their siding. But most people do, without realizing it.
And it isn’t just one door. The U.S. Department of Energy lists window and door edges as one of the top spots air leaks form in a typical home. Add up the gap under the back door, the loose sash on the guest-room window, the worn seal on the sliding patio door, and you’re basically running your heater with a small window cracked open all winter.

That’s why the ENERGY STAR program (the government’s official energy-efficiency label, run by the EPA) says homeowners can save an average of 15% on their heating and cooling bills just by sealing air leaks and adding some insulation. Not by replacing anything expensive. Just by closing gaps that were already there.
Why you can’t feel what’s costing you money
If the leaks are that big, why can’t you feel them?
Two reasons. First, air doesn’t rush through a small gap in a straight line. It drifts in slow, sideways currents your skin only picks up when it’s really cold or really hot outside. On a mild fall day, a leak that’s costing you real money in January feels like nothing.
Second, your house is quietly pulling air in without you noticing. Every time your bathroom fan runs, your dryer vents, or your kitchen range hood pulls smoke out, the house has to pull the same amount of air back in from somewhere. And it’ll pull it in through the easiest path it can find. Those tiny, invisible edges around your doors and windows.
Your heater or A/C pays for that. Every bit of warm (or cool) air that slips out has to be replaced. So the system runs longer. Runs harder. Costs more. And you never lay a hand on the actual reason.
The bill you’re paying for it
The Department of Energy says you can cut up to 10% off your total energy bill just by weatherstripping your windows and doors. ENERGY STAR puts the ceiling for full air sealing plus insulation at around 15% of your heating and cooling costs.
If your winter gas bill runs $200 (about €185) or your summer electric bill hits $300 (about €280), that’s real money going straight out the window every month.
Here’s the kicker: the Department of Energy also says weatherstripping and caulking are some of the fastest-paying-off home fixes you can do, often paying for themselves in under a year. Not ten years. Not five. One heating or cooling season.
So the question stops being should I seal the gaps. It becomes how do I find them if I can’t feel them.
How to find every invisible leak in your house in under an hour
Here’s what almost nobody knows: the Department of Energy has its own free, low-tech test for finding air leaks. It uses nothing but a stick of incense (or a small lit candle) and about 45 minutes.
The walk-through, straight from the DOE’s own homeowner guide:
- Pick a cold or windy day. The bigger the temperature gap between inside and outside, the easier leaks are to spot.
- Close everything up. Shut all your outside doors, windows, and (if you have one) the fireplace flue.
- Turn off anything that burns gas (the furnace, water heater) as a safety step, because the next step pulls air through the house.
- Turn on every exhaust fan you’ve got. Bathroom fans, the kitchen range hood, the clothes dryer if it vents outside. This pulls air out of the house and forces outside air to rush in through any hole it can find.
- Light the incense stick (or candle) and slowly walk it along the edge of every window and door. Move it slowly, inch by inch (2–3 cm at a time), all the way around the frame.
- Watch the smoke. Anywhere it suddenly bends sideways, gets pulled toward the frame, or blows into the room, you’ve found a leak. Stick a piece of painter’s tape on the spot and keep going.
The whole walk usually takes less than an hour for a small house. You’ll almost certainly find leaks in spots you’d have sworn were airtight. The top corners of window sashes, the side of the front door where the lock is, and the bottom edge of any outside door are the usual culprits.
Sealing what you find, without wasting money on the wrong stuff
Once you’ve marked the leaks, the fix is embarrassingly cheap. But the right material depends on the gap, and the Department of Energy is clear that grabbing one type and slapping it on everything is the single biggest mistake people make.

Match the material to the gap:
- Around window sashes (the part of the window that slides up and down): Use V-strip weatherstripping (also called tension seal). It’s thin, self-sticking, and shaped like a folded V that springs open when the window closes. A few dollars a roll.
- Along the top and sides of an outside door frame: Use stick-on foam tape or a rubber compression strip. Foam handles uneven gaps well. Rubber lasts longer on doors you use every day.
- Under an outside door (that gap at the bottom you can see daylight through): Use a door sweep. That’s a strip that screws or sticks onto the bottom of the door and drags gently across the floor. This is often the biggest single leak in the whole house, and it’s the fastest thing to fix.
- Around window frames that never move (where the frame meets the wall): Use caulk here, not weatherstripping. The DOE draws a clean line: weatherstripping is for parts that move, caulk is for parts that don’t.
Total cost for most homes: $20 to $40 (about €18 to €37) at any hardware store. Total time: an afternoon.
One honest limit
This fix takes care of the moving edges: window sashes, door edges, frames. It won’t fix leaky air ducts hidden inside your walls (that’s a bigger job), and it won’t turn an old single-pane window into a modern double-pane one. If your bills stay stubborn after you’ve sealed every gap, that’s when it’s worth paying a pro to do a full energy audit. For most homes, though, these moving edges are where the biggest, cheapest wins are hiding.
