This existing building has been completely renovated and remodeled by Dariel Studio in order to create a modern family home in Shanghai, China. There are many elements that stand out abut this penthouse, but maybe the most striking is the cobalt blue color that has been chosen to accent some of the walls in the living area. The spaces area generous, and they have been designed with people in mind. The communal spaces are designed in such a way as to reunite the members of the family and to help them entertain their guests. The sitting area is not very wide, but the double height of the ceiling above it compensates, creating the feeling of volume. A lot more room is dedicated to the dining area with its adjacent high bar-table. The bar-table overlooks the wine room through a glazed facade. This room where wine is stored at optimal temperature conditions has been fitted with organic-shaped plywood shelves. The materials are noble and well matched. The coldness of marble is balanced by the use of warm colored wood. The colors are are sober and neutral, except for the high blue wall that adds to the elegance of the design.
The main entrance leads to the sitting area on one side, and to the staircase spiral that organizes the access to the rest of the penthouse on the other.
The sitting room is dominated by the high marble and wood shelf, that goes up to stories high. This monumental structure with marble sides and back and wooden shelves serves to display decoration objects on the top shelves and to integrate the fly screen at the bottom. The copper ball-shaped pendant hang low above the living room table, reflecting the light and the other objects and colors of the room.
The dining room and bar are given generous space and consequently high importance. The moldings on the ceiling and the boiseries on the walls crate a refined and sophisticated atmosphere. This atmosphere is emphasized by the elegant furniture and by the choice of lighting in the room.
The most monumental piece of the penthouse is the spiraling stair. The dynamic is created at the bottom, by the black and white marble circles on the floor. From this base, the sculptural white staircase twists masterfully towards the top floor. The wooden steps bring a touch of warmth to the whole structure, and visually the mix of colors is comforting.
The master bedroom with its en-suite bathroom are of elegant simplicity and refinement. The four-poster bed is the star piece in the room.
The bathroom is visually part of the room, as it is only separated from it by a glass enclosure. The Corian freestanding bathtub fills the center like a piece of art in a gallery.
Mirrored folding doors separate the walk-in closet.
The guest bedroom is a funkier interpretation of the classical style, with a wardrobe made of suitcase-like containers, and a desk painted half in black.
