This Crochet Granny Squares Blanket is the Largest in the World, for now!

Italy has just taken over South Africa’s listing in the Guinness World Book of Records for the World’s largest crochet blanket. Put together in the city of Trieste, Italy, the event was organized by the city’s Picknitartcafe group. Individuals crocheted the squares and sent them in – to be sewn together in the town square. As a result, they created the largest crochet blanket in the world on June 20, 2015. The plan now is to auction off groups of squares to benefit the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association. What a fantastic community-driven project. So many people made this happen and played a part. And it was, no doubt, the largest “yarn bomb” that Italy has ever seen when those pieces started arriving in the mail. The blanket is over 3,000 square meters (33,000 square feet). That works out to ¾ of an acre of crocheted squares, in all colors and patterns. And the result is a glorious burst of color as far as the eye can see. Granny would be proud.
