A “Twist” on a Modern House by UNStudio - VilLA NM in Upstate New York

A local landmark in upstate New York – VilLA NM – burned down earlier this year. The home was a first in North America by Amsterdam-based architects Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos of UNStudio, and the firm hopes to rebuild it to its original glory. Located on Kenoza Lake, VilLA NM was popular for its avant-garde design, standing out among its 19th and 20th century neighbors. This contemporary single-family home makes a bold, geometric statement by its two “boxes” – one that follows the upward slope of the hill, and the other suspended over it, putting a literal “twist” on this home’s design. Inside, this twist in the structure houses the kitchen, bathroom and fireplace, and becomes an open-concept space enclosed in walls of windows offering 360º views. UNStudio.
