Small Cottage Design with Large Covered Deck in Hawaii

This small cottage design is making some big waves on Big Island, Hawaii. In the wake of its first lava-land home, Architect Craig Steely designed this cool cottage with a funky edge and a natural, organic flair. What’s simply dubbed “Lavaflow 2” does not play second fiddle when it comes to creative, contemporary design. Nestled on a cliff’s edge, a 1,400-sq.-ft. cantilevered concrete slab forms the foundation of the cottage, which is wrapped in wide expanses of glass, embracing the awe-inspiring ocean views. Opposite ocean-side, a large covered deck is a favorite for enjoying the outdoors in all weather. Inside, contemporary concrete floors and rich natural-wood walls and ceilings turn traditional design on its head. A wonderful circular bathroom boasts a soaker tub at its center, with a round skylight framing the boundless blue view overhead. Funky details add a fun flair to the modern home, such as the cool red tile in the bathroom and matching kitchen backsplash, and the fabulous bright furnishings throughout. Architect Craig Steely.
