Glenn Howells Architects Raises the Rippled Roof at Modern Savill Building

Glenn Howells Architects has brought architectural notoriety to Berkshire, England, with the design for the ultra-contemporary Savill Building, a multi-award-winning project which was recently recognized in the 2008 International Architecture Awards for the Best New Global Design. This rolling structure offers a modern fluidity that puts traditional architectural rigidity at ease. The sense of movement is inspired by the natural lines of the landscape, and comes via an undulating gridshell roof constructed of larch and clad in green oak. The rippled roof appears to float above interiors, which are divided into three principal areas: the foyer, a restaurant/retail and an exhibition space. This wavy structure forms the entrance The Savill Garden and The Royal Landscape, a man-made landscape that attracts 500,000 visitors a year. Glenn Howells Architects.
