Known for cutting-edge design the whole world over, Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects arrived in the city of Breda, Netherlands, with grand ambitions for a concert hall. On first impression, Popstage MeZZ gives no indication of its purpose. The ultra-modern, asymmetrical “blob” boasts no visible openings in its facade of rounded, oxidized copper, apart from a series of sliver slits along the perimeter. The entrance to the hall comes via its connected complement, an existing structure more traditional in form and housing a restaurant, cafe and meeting rooms. A covert passageway leads into Popstage, which houses the lobby, a stage and the music hall. Adding function to form, the structure’s acoustical requisites resulted in a double dome design – two shells sandwiching one meter of air, offering sound insulation.
