Rustic Style Home – Upside-down Architecture

Making unusual home plans an everyday occurrence, Hutchison & Maul Architecture has designed this rustic style home plan in Seattle, Washington and quietly turned traditional architecture on its head – literally! Where public living areas generally occupy a home’s ground floor while upper floors are reserved for more private zones and sleeping quarters, this upside-down home has inverted that order. The bedrooms and bathrooms are found on the main floor, and a contemporary kitchen, living room and dining room combination are in the new upper-level addition. Using the foundations and walls of the existing old bungalow, the architects completed their renovation with a casual, communal second storey to this wood clad house design for additional living. A rustic-style, timber, exposed post-and-beam ceiling features a large operable skylight, which floods this open-concept shared socializing space with natural light. Hutchison & Maul Architecture
