For the renovation of this Victorian family home, Venn Architects decided to create a sympathetic contrast that would emphasize the distinction between the property's heritage and the new elements that came to update it. The clever use of light, the angles and the spatial division give a layered feel to the inside. The central stairwell dominated the space in a dramatic statement. Though imposing in size and made of metal, it looks light and airy thanks to the empty spaces between the steps which let the light circulate freely at all heights. The walls along, above and under the stairs are used for display and storage purposes. Half way up the stairs, a big landing has been fitted with floor to ceiling bookcases that contain and show at the same time the owners' extensive book collection. A cozy cowhide upholstered armchair invites you to pick a book, sit down comfortably and enjoy it. A sleek eat-in open kitchen overlooks the staircase in front and opens to a nice urban garden with trees and potted plants. The big glass sliding door lets the kitchen space extend outside and brings in a lot of natural light, that seems to climb the stairs and invade the upper spaces. Four glossy red low stools placed in the garden just outside the kitchen invite to casual socialization. On a white background, noble materials such as travertine tiles, stone slabs and wood create a stylish atmosphere.

The high ceilings, the empty volumes, the light and the architectural elements create a sense of harmony between the old and new features of the house.

Going up the airy stairs one can admire a nice collection of photographs from every step. This wall becomes a work of art in itself.

The kitchen is sleek and made of quality materials. Glossy cupboards marry beautifully with the glossy stone worktops and the lacquered seats of the high stools. The kitchen serves as dining space as well and extends to the outside through big sliding openings.
