The plum trees were the thing when Saunders Architecture designed this compact guest cabin. That, and figuring out how to design a 15 square meter feet house (just over 160 square feet) in the most exciting way possible. The owners wanted the guest accommodation to be a lovely place to spend an afternoon, to spend a night – and also a good place to start the day. In this small garden just outside Haugesund, Norway, the architects came up with the “Slice” house. They worked around the old plumb trees, which now grow through the triangular slice of a house. They look surreal, growing up from the floor of the deck, don’t they? And the black exterior of the cabin works so well with the white interior of the sitting area. And we just love the single red chair on the white slat flooring. It’s a living, breathing work of art. Saunders and his colleagues believe that it’s easier to let the fantasy run loose on small buildings. And we think they just might be right!
