Located outside of Zurich in Eglisau, Switzerland, this concrete prefab house was designed by architect Felix Oesch for a young, forward-thinking and discerning family of an urban planner, an industrial designer, and their 14-month-old daughter. This concrete prefab delivers exactly what the clients wanted – modern, minimal design and clean, contemporary living. The prefab is built on a plot of land that slopes from the road on one side down to a lush river valley on the other. In order to minimize street noise and maximize the breathtaking views of the Rhine River, the architect designed the house so its front facade opens to the green river valley, while backing out onto the road. A set of stairs leads you from the rear parking area down to a heavy wooden door, which opens to reveal a grand kitchen, living and dining area of timber and concrete that the architect describes as “a strange kind of church.” This modern house is indeed a religious experience for lover of modern architecture and innovative design. A partially covered deck provides a wonderful outdoor eatery for the family, rain or shine. Continue down to the home’s lower level, where a second living room, bedrooms and an intriguing bathroom – a “mirror-image” design in a long, linear space featuring two toilets, two sinks and two showers with a long rectangular clerestory window – offer added privacy. It’s the unassuming quality of this modern prefab house that makes it stand out most! Overlooking Lake Michigan, Chameleon House by Anderson Anderson Architecture is a simple structure with a strong vertical presence, rising amid rolling hills and agricultural landscape. Clad in galvanized metal and wrapped in a skirting wall of recycled translucent polyethelene slats, this contemporary house boasts the benefits of blending with its surroundings and the changing seasons, hence its name. “The translucent polyethylene material set out over the dully reflective wall cladding is chosen for its ability to gather the light and color of its landscape, dissolving the finely shadowed and inexplicably haloed structure into the seasonal color cycle of snow and ice and black twig tracery; pale pink blossom clouds; pollen green leaf and grass; golden straw and vivid foliage,” according to Anderson Anderson Architecture.

Born out of rocketing real estate prices and declining livable space, this compact container prefab in Trebnje, Slovenia is an innovative design that takes lemons and makes lemonade - the ultra-modern ConHouse. It is the compact design that gained this home its notoriety, apart of course from its funky facade and eye-catching color scheme. The two-storey prefab mini home is assembled of two perpendicularly positioned containers, one atop the other. The upper container overhangs the main entrance, creating a shaded pathway leading into the house, as well as a shaded rear terrace. The unique composition of the structure also allows the exposed roof of the main floor to double as a rooftop patio, accessed by a sliding glass door. We’ve all heard the old adage “good things come in small packages.” Well, ConHouse proves that to be true. The compact design features a cool, contemporary interior with an artful winding staircase and floor-to-ceiling windows. ConHouse
