Contemporary Finnish Cottage - four-season home in Fiskars, Finland

The modern building industry is becoming less about overcoming nature, and more about becoming one with nature, as illustrated by Humelgard House in Fiskars, Finland. Designed by Helsinki-based Friman Laaksonen Architects, this contemporary four-season cottage boasts a simple exterior, almost utilitarian for its galvanized steel and spruce cladding. Also in traditional Finnish fashion, this house is aligned with the northeast / southwest axis – a truly well-thought out position that offers protection from the harsh Finnish elements while maximizing on the sun’s light and heat to temper the indoor living areas. Inside, the home is comfortable and casual. Divided into three areas – two main living rooms and a smaller loft space connecting them – this home’s rustic style is softened with fine details, luxurious light woods, and brightened by large expanses of windows.
