Modern California Home in Santa Monica inspired by trees ...

The LA Times recently featured the fabulous home in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Santa Monica, California, aptly dubbed King House. This palatial home – truly fit for a king – was designed by John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects with an eye for detail and a modern twist. Inspired by light permeating leafy trees, the home’s unique exterior of green and white is a fitting introduction to this fresh, modern design. The house itself is positioned at the back of the lot, providing plenty of greenspace while highlighting the home’s interesting L-shaped configuration. Expansive windows and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors flood this large space with the warm daylight, while a front outdoor patio invites al fresco living. Inside, this four-bedroom, four-bathroom home boasts lots of cool surprises – a great kitchen with a skylight; a comfortable yet professional home office; a temperature-controlled wine cellar tucked under the stairwell; a luxurious spa-inspired master bathroom; and of course, the outdoor living spaces with priceless views. Ranch Style Homes – a rustic ranch house wisconsin style

Redefining the “charming home in the ‘burbs,” Johnsen Schmaling Architects have designed Ferrous House in Spring Prairie, Wisconsin. Reinvented, renovated and revamped from the ground up, the original 1970s structure was demolished, apart from the original foundation, plumbing and main perimeter walls. Built on a slight slope among the trees, the modern new 1,380-sq.-ft. ranch style home features a contemporary cube shape with a facade of steel panels. Along the front of this rustic ranch house, Nanogel-filled clerestory windows flood interiors with natural light. Exterior wood accents take a cue from the home’s countryside surroundings, and make their way indoors where warm, rich woods are a prevalent building and finishing material. Enhancing this cozy interior design, a fireplace is the immediate focal point, once you get past the incredible, peaceful views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Although this stunning home is decidedly “rural,” the chic and sleek urban interiors cannot be denied. Bringing up the rear, indoors extend out onto a linear, south-facing patio. This innovative, contemporary home design earned Johnsen Schmaling Architects a 2009 Small Project Award from the American Institute of Architects. Johnsen Schmaling Architects

Beautiful Country House – Modern Luxurious Lookout

You might say that this beautiful country house designed by Hutchison & Maul Architecture is for the birds – and bird-lovers looking for a luxurious place to kick back and enjoy the view. Located on Vashon Island, Washington, Bird House is an amazing 2,400-sq.-ft. home boasting beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows that provide panoramic views from virtually any room. From the exterior, the house blends beautifully with surrounding countryside, thanks to the heavy use of glass and wood for its facade. The house consists of two volumes – a living pavilion, and a sleeping tower, which are connected via a glazed entry foyer. The expansive main roof overhangs on each side of the house, giving the illusion of a pair of wings in flight. Interiors are warm, featuring lots of rustic wood from ceiling to floor throughout the home, creating a charming, country chic ambience. Beyond this, the main focus is always on the windows, and the world outside. Hutchison & Maul Architecture.

Australian Architecture Firm Blurs Boundaries in the Perforated House

The Perforated House is an unusual modern house with its own agenda. Designed by Australian architecture firm Kavellaris Urban Design in an infill neighborhood in Brunswick, Victoria, the house “is a platform to establish a critical dialogue within our built environment; to raise questions as much as to find solutions,” according to the architects. “The project is a critique on our cultural attitudes and how we determine them, on what we consider to be of heritage significance and how to narrate such ideas in a critical and contemporary manner.” This modern terrace house features a unique facade that can go from opaque, to translucent, to fully open to the outdoors. Blurring the boundaries between public and private spaces, indoors and out, the home’s exterior is reflective by day, boasting a solid look adorned with graphics. By night the home becomes a modern, semi-transparent light box. Behind the massive sliding walls, the house boasts an artistic interior where it’s all in the details. This innovative house plan puts the main gathering areas on the first floor, with outdoor living rooms opening onto a north-facing terrace. This courtyard house design featuring a colorful mural really sets this cool Australian house apart from the rest. Kavellaris Urban Design

Modern Portuguese Architecture ... will change the way you see the world

Described by folks at SousaSantos, a modern Portuguese architecture firm, as a “vision device”, the contemporary Y House is designed to change the way you see the world – literally. “The big curved window is this statement vortex,” explains the architect of this unusual house plan. “It creates a visual path that, like a camera traveling, reveals the image of the landscape.” The minimalist white facade features expansive windows throughout, allowing for a view of the outdoors from every point in the house. Functionally, this modern architecture features a Y-shaped floor plan with a distinct division of living, leisure and working areas, which branch off of the main living wing. At the end of each wing of this innovative house plan, a stunning picture window offers a snapshot of nature. SousaSantos Architects
