Toronto based architecture firm Studio Junction has revolutionized the concept of “infill neighborhood” with this amazing courtyard architecture. Set within an urban, mixed-use environment, this cool, contemporary design proves there is always room for a garden. This house and office space was designed for a family of four with interior courtyards that invite nature indoors, and life into these fabulous outdoor living rooms. Traditionally indoor living spaces are open to the outdoors, and windows are directed inwards to overlook these landscaped courtyards. Inside, this house proves there is such a thing as “courtyard interior design.” Apart from the outdoor spaces, indoors boast a little piece of nature with natural wood covering much of every visible surface, for an organic aesthetic. Kudos to these Canadian architects! Studio Junction.

Created by architect Stanley Saitowitz of San Francisco, California-based Natoma Architects, Inc., this bridge house design in Marin, California is as gorgeous as it is unusual. This modern house, set on a 15-acre wooded property, stretches 22 ft. across a grassy ravine. Above the dip, this raised bridge house plan spans two storeys, but the home’s strong horizontal presence is most prevalent, highlighted by wide, solid panels and a glass wall enclosing the upper floor. To accommodate practical living and privacy, the architect reversed the conventional floor plan by putting the main living areas on the top floor along with expansive windows, while positioning the private areas and bedrooms on the lower floor. Two open courts on the upper level – one acting as the entrance way and the other leading to the pool – connect this contemporary house design to nature. Paths lead out from the courtyards onto the hillside. Natoma Architects, Inc.

An amazing example of Polish modern architecture by Moomoo Architects... Scheduled for completion in 2010 in Lodz, Poland, this unconventional house design takes a modern approach to traditional Polish houses. The unusual home is clad entirely in Thermopian – a plastic material typically used in roofing applications and favored for its high thermal, acoustic and insulating properties. But this material also offers this contemporary style architecture an unusual aesthetic for minimalist living that comes in any color. The shape itself of this plastic house is reminiscent of a traditional house style, but modernized with sleeker, simpler details. A distinctive angled wall offers privacy while fulfilling local building requirements for a building line with plot borders. Moomoo Architects

The modern copper, concrete and glass Clip House in Madrid, Spain was designed by the architects at Bernalte-León y Asociados. The cool, contemporary style home’s striking sculptural design takes shape from copper plates, which are enclosed in vertical panels forming expansive glass walls, and cantilevered from a bold, vertical concrete backing. The architectural copper artfully wraps around the home’s living areas, providing a fabulous view from the inside out, while offering an interesting aesthetic from the outside as well. Atop these copper enclosures, exterior rooftop pathways lead to an outlook over the city. This awesome house design has been shortlisted for the 2009 Copper in Architecture Awards. The winner will be announced on September 29 at a ceremony held in London. Bernalte-León y Asociados
