Modern Cottages – Sustainable Prefab Cottage Design on Display

Shabby-chic is the style and sustainability and comfort is the name of the game for these great modern cottages, designed by Casper Mork-Ulnes of Modern Cabana (a San Francisco-based company that builds prefab backyard structures), and showcased by Sunset Magazine. As a ready-to-use, prefab cottage retreat or as an addition to your existing home, the Modern Cottage makes a great guest house that’ll wow visitors for its contemporary construction, creature comforts and eco-friendly design. For this particular home, the designer combined two Modern Cabana structures to form a larger cottage. A composite-deck patio encircles the home, creating wonderful outdoor living areas including an al fresco kitchen, a play area for the kids, a lounge for the adults, and an outdoor shower. For the pampered pooch, a mini version of this eco-friendly cottage comes complete with a Green roof. This Earth-friendly home features recycled denim insulation, no-VOC finishes, local materials, renewable bamboo flooring underfoot and overhead, recycled tire-rubber roofing. This cool, prefab cottage design is on display by Sunset Magazine on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until July 19. Modern Cabana

Modern Swedish Homes – Scandinavian Summer Cottage Design

Swedish architectural dream team Tham & Videgard Hansson Arkitekter designed the modern Archipelago Home, nestled among the islands near Stockholm, Sweden. This lightweight Scandinavian summer cottage of wood and glass is largely inspired by its location, boasting dark woods and a low-profile form, a strong vertical presence and windows galore to take in the spectacular view. A series of staggered rooms characterize this modern Swedish home, facing the sun in the south and the sea to the west. Public living areas occupy the front of the house, facing one another with their exterior walls of windows, while bedrooms and private living areas are tucked quietly toward the back of the house. Floor-to-ceiling windows flank the front of the home, opening onto a spacious angled deck that unifies the zigzagging floor plan while providing a connection between indoors and out. Interiors are bright and modern, designed with an eye on nature and a nod to chic urban influences. Tham & Videgard Hansson Arkitekter

Unusual Summer House hides behind fabric panels

Denmark’s Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter has designed this cool summer house in Jorlunde, with an “open concept” design. Taking their plan a step beyond the traditional definition, where rooms simply open onto one another, this modern home offers a seamless flow from outdoors in. The simple structure sits above ground on concrete pillars, cantilevered over the slightly sloping property. Framed in steel, the house boasts sliding glass walls that dissolve the inside-outside boundary when opened. Fabric panels along the home’s perimeter can be closed to provide privacy. But even when closed from public view, interior terraces open to the sky to maintain this unusual house's connection to the great outdoors. As the sun travels across the sky throughout the summer day, the various strategically placed interior courtyards maximize natural light and warmth at any given time. Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter

Contemporary Cottage on the Lake - Modern, not Modest

Rural Iowa is the setting for this contemporary cottage design by San Francisco-based MinDay Architects who, despite the densely populated West Lake Okoboji shoreline, have artfully incorporated privacy and nature into their modern residential design. While the traditional “cottage” wasn’t on the owners’ list of criteria, they still wanted a retreat that focused on the lake and the massive oaks that separate the water from the farmland, according to MinDay Architects. “In response to the narrow wedge-shaped lot with the lake at one end, we conceived of the house as a three-dimensional set of ‘blinders’ that obscure the neighbors and gradually open up to the lake beyond,” explain the architects. “Passing through the house one moves from areas of density to areas with a diaphanous quality – the house is a spatial gradient.” While the wood-clad exterior blends with the home’s natural surroundings, interiors are sleek, chic and contemporary – certainly not your traditional cottage retreat. Tall ceilings and expansive windows create a modern and bright gallery-like space, which turns your attention to the lake just outside. But those “cottagy” elements still echo in the details, like a cozy outdoor dining area off the open-to-above kitchen; the open-concept layout ideal for entertaining, relaxing and reflecting; and check out the fabulous headboard in the master bedroom, depicting a ripple of water executed in natural wood. Luxury Cottage Home in Canada - this island cottage is 'superkul'

shift-cottage-9.jpg

Designed by aptly named architecture firm Superkul, the luxury Shift Cottage located on Canada’s Georgian Bay is super-cool, to say the least. The calm, uncomplicated characteristic of this northern Ontario setting sets the tone for this modern 2,000-sq.-ft. haven of rest and relaxation. The island cottage sits on the rocky terrain of the Canadian Shield, the subject of many Group of Seven masterpieces, and this idyllic location has too inspired the architects in designing this rustic home of quiet luxuries. A line of evergreens hides this cedar-clad cottage from public view. Behind the privacy of the trees, two separate volumes are linked by a glass walkway. Each wing of the house boasts large windows to take in the view, or for a more hands-on experience of the outdoors, wooden decks surround the home, framing picture-perfect views of forest and the Bay – the truest forms of Canadian cottage delights.
