Can you imagine a more inspiring place to work? The main idea of this small house design is the modern cube on a hill – the curious home office of Peter Frazier, overlooking Chuckanut Bay in Bellingham, Washington. Gone are the days of the sterile cubicle where boredom brings you to tears as you count down the minutes until 5 o'clock. This unusual small house plan delivers amazing views of land and bay, with glass on three sides of this compact home and a deck that cantilevers over the slope and lush forest below. There's nothing like innovation to inspire more innovation, and it's easy to see how you could become a workaholic in a cool home office like this one!

This Loft House design was created in 2007 / 2008 by a team of student architects-to-be including Ryan Stephenson, Joey Fante, Kait Caldwell, Aimee O’Carroll, as part of a design-build project called Rural Studio, run by Auburn University. Only students could ever make their dollars stretch so far – kudos kids! With a budget of just $20,000, this innovative team designed a modern loft residence with $10,000 allotted for materials and the remaining $10,000 for labor costs. This compact house design is small but sweet, and in keeping with the main goal of the project, it’s highly functional and economical to the max. Designed on a hill surrounded by forest, the slope house plan really takes a bare-bones approach to architecture. The exterior of this compact cottage is simple, while the interior is both straightforward and efficient, with a loft layout that maximizes every inch of living space. Read on for photos if this project in progress. Rural Studio

Who knew that the combination of small site plus small budget could equal to something so massively cool? Innovative modern firm Pb Elemental Architecture designed the contemporary style house, Crockett Residence, on a budget of just $167 per sq. ft. The 790-sq.-ft. compact house on a 1,600-sq.-ft. lot packs a punch with its contemporary architecture and sleek, urban house plan. The contemporary cube-shaped home features a modern facade with a sleek, industrial-style steel staircase leading up to a steel-siding main floor, and a glass-enclosed second storey. Inside, you won’t believe how much the architects have stuffed into this small space: a foyer, an open-concept kitchen-living-dining area, four bedrooms, two baths, a utilities area, a large storage room and a secondary suite with a full kitchen, bath, laundry and closet. Topping it all off is a rooftop patio. Now that's sweet! Pb Elemental Architecture

Designed for a historian to house his most-prized possessions – his books – this unique compact house design of 850-sq.-ft., complete with a writing studio and library, is the perfect place to sit, study, read, write, listen to music or just relax among the trees here in Long Island, New York. “The building was conceived as a mutable presence in the landscape,” says architect Andrew Berman. The home’s unusual copper-clad facade reflects the ever-changing colors of nature. A simple, wood-framed glass door opens to the V-shaped house plan. Angled out are the north and south facades of an ever-expanding interior that’s flooded with natural light through the large windows throughout. The double-height entrance leads to the kitchen and bathroom, and the working and entertainment areas at the read of the home. “The interior is defined by douglas fir, books and light,” explains the architect. Stairs lead up to a cantilevered second floor, nine ft. above the ground overlooking the treetops of the forest. This overhanging upper floor provides a covered ground-floor patio – a great spot for al fresco reading. Andrew Berman Architect

Designed by Aleks Istanbullu Architects, this little modern guest house has made quite the big impression in Beverly Hills. This small guest house – an 855-sq.-ft. addition to the existing home overlooking Coldwater Canyon – makes a wonderful, “nature-inspired sculptural retreat” for visiting guests, as described by the architect, or as a haven for residents looking for a little “me” time away. Initially planned as a one-room home, this modern design evolved from its original cube-shaped living area to include a parallel rectangular volume that houses a compact kitchen, a bedroom and bath. The whole shebang is clad is corrugated green siding, giving the house its distinctive and playful street presence. Inside, it’s a whimsical den for visiting, reading (check out the double-height library with 16-ft. bookshelves!) and relaxing and in the luxury of a totally interesting and inspiring home.
