Diamondhouse studio features edgy silhouette with delicate design

Los Angeles, California-based architecture firm XTEN designed Diamondhouse and hit a “high note” with this harmonious home extension. The live work house here in Santa Monica was given this gorgeous music studio addition featuring a funky facade with a perforated pattern in its white walls.

The structure itself boasts a sharp silhouette that is softened by its dainty details. “The panels impart a delicate quality to the otherwise hard edged and programmatically driven geometry of the building. Daylight brings out the etched lines and patterned edges of the cement panels, which in direct sunlight appear as thin as a ceramic vase,” explain the architects. With the lights on at night, the studio reminds us of a glowing lantern, its striking pattern beckoning from the inside out.

These imaginative laser cut walls extend up past the building proper, enclosing a rooftop sundeck that is accessed via a staircase running up the side of the structure – the perfect spot to practice musical creativity and quiet contemplation.

Located on a steep slope in a deep canyon, the studio site offered a small footprint with limited access, but the views surrounding the space are second to none. Terraces and an outdoor fireplace feature give this work space a comfortable, casual look and feel.
A large sliding glass wall allows for garden views while illuminating the minimalist interiors with natural daylight. Inside, somewhat of a blank slate style features blonde wood floors and white walls – neutral to let the creative juices flow!
